A study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association aimed to determine whether malignant left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) identified community‐dwelling individuals initially free of cardiovascular disease are at high risk of asymptomatic decline in left ventricular ejection fraction or a clinical cardiovascular event. The results revealed that malignant LVH is predictive of progression to asymptomatic left ventricular dysfunction, heart failure especially with reduced ejection fraction, and cardiovascular-related mortality. Thus, malignant LVH can be considered a high‐risk phenotype among individuals without known cardiovascular disease, and may be regarded as a target for increased surveillance and more‐aggressive therapies.
